The Role of Universities in Shaping Media Discourses in Afghanistan

In the contemporary world, universities and the media are recognized as two influential institutions that play a pivotal role in the production, dissemination, and reproduction of knowledge and public awareness. Accordingly, understanding the nature of the relationship between these two institutions and the dynamics of their mutual influence is of considerable importance. A constructive relationship between universities and the media can enhance the quality of knowledge production, strengthen public awareness, improve the identification of societal needs and priorities, and facilitate social and national development. Despite this significance, the relationship between universities and the media in Afghanistan has been marked by numerous challenges and has yet to evolve into a meaningful and effective partnership grounded in mutual needs and shared objectives. This article examines the role of universities in shaping media discourse in Afghanistan and seeks to answer the following research question: How can the role of universities in guiding and strengthening the country's media discourse be enhanced? This study employs a descriptive-analytical research design, with data collected and analyzed through a comprehensive review of relevant literature and documentary sources. The findings indicate that the relationship between universities and the media in Afghanistan is weak, unstable, and lacks a coherent institutional framework. This situation has contributed to the production of superficial media content with limited scientific grounding, inadequate understanding of audience needs, reduced media capacity to promote social cohesion, and an inability to construct inclusive national media narratives. Furthermore, universities themselves face significant challenges due to limited engagement with society and insufficient understanding of its actual needs, which restricts their ability to address the scientific and professional challenges of society and respond effectively to labor market demands. The findings further reveal that universities in Afghanistan have not played an effective or influential role in producing and guiding media discourse. This institutional weakness has contributed to discursive fragmentation and diminished social cohesion.
