A Comparative Study of the Similarities and Differences among Theological Schools, with Emphasis on the Hanafi School

The commonalities and differences among theological schools of thought arise from the distinctions between theological sects such as the Ash'arites, Maturidites, and Mu'tazilites, which are among the most significant branches of Islamic sciences dedicated to the explanation of religious doctrines. Although a hadith mentioning seventy-three sects has been cited regarding Islamic sects, the present study does not encompass all of them. Throughout Islamic history, various theological schools—including the Ash'arites, Maturidites, Mu'tazilites, and Twelver Shi'ism—have emerged, each sharing certain foundational beliefs while differing on specific issues. This article, employing a descriptive-analytical method, examines the points of commonality and divergence among these schools and compares their perspectives on the role of reason, tradition (naql), divine attributes, faith (īmān), and human actions. The findings indicate that the Maturidite school, by maintaining a balance between reason and tradition, has adopted a moderate and balanced approach in Islamic theology. Following examination and research, the findings reveal that the views of theologians—such as the followers of Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari, Wasil ibn 'Ata', and Abu Mansur al-Maturidi—converge on fundamental principles, including belief in God, prophethood, the truthfulness of the prophetic mission, and belief in the Day of Resurrection. These commonalities suggest that theological differences often pertain to interpretation and explanation rather than to the essence of faith itself. One of the most sensitive points of divergence concerns the status of reason: the Mu'tazilites prioritize reason over tradition (naql), while the Ash'arites emphasize tradition and impose limitations on reason. The Maturidites, however, adopt a middle ground between reason and tradition. Likewise, differences exist regarding divine attributes, with the Maturidites affirming them.
