With the expansion of air travel and the residence of Muslims in regions with unique geographical conditions, such as the Scandinavian countries where the length of day and night becomes abnormal during certain seasons of the year, determining the prescribed times of fasting (imsak) and breaking the fast (iftar) has become a significant juristic challenge. This study examines the rulings of fasting under such circumstances and seeks to answer the main question: What is the Sharīʿah-based criterion for determining the times of imsak and iftar, and what are the rulings governing the fasting of Muslims in situations where sunrise and sunset cannot be observed in their normal manner, such as during air travel or in regions characterized by exceptionally long or irregular days and nights? This research is juristic and ijtihād-based in nature and employs a library-based (documentary) methodology with a descriptive-analytical approach. The opinions of classical and contemporary jurists, fatwas, and resolutions of contemporary fiqh academies concerning fasting during air travel and in regions with abnormal day-night cycles were collected, described, and analyzed in light of Qur’anic evidence, Prophetic traditions, juristic principles, and methodologies of Islamic legal reasoning. The primary objective of this study is to clarify and examine the Islamic legal rulings related to fasting in special geographical and temporal circumstances, including air travel and regions with irregular day-night patterns, based on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence and the opinions of classical and contemporary scholars. The study aims to identify the correct criteria for determining the times of imsak and iftar and to explain the proper observance of fasting under such conditions. This study seeks to provide practical solutions for Muslims who live in such regions or travel under these circumstances. These solutions may include adopting the timings of a nearby region where sunrise and sunset can be normally observed or relying on accurate calculations for determining fasting times when conventional signs are unavailable.
